Israeli army reveals the mystery behind LF Hasrouni’s death
Instead of relying on local authorities and the judiciary, the Lebanese seem destined to resort to Israeli sources to extract the needed information and intel.
Just recently, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) revealed shocking and groundbreaking news about the assassination of the late Lebanese Forces (LF) member Elias al-Hasrouni.
What did the IDF reveal?
On November 14, 2025, IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee announced on X that “the IDF confirms what has been circulating about the assassination of the Secretary General of the Lebanese Forces Party in Bint Jbeil, Elias al-Hasrouni, by the 121st Unit of the terrorist Hezbollah, contrary to the rumors published by Hezbollah, which claimed that he was killed in a traffic accident. Al-Hasrouni, who was 70 at the time of his assassination, was known for his staunchly anti-Hezbollah stance.”
He claimed that “on the night of August 1, 2023, members of Unit 121 ambushed Hasrouni on a road near his home in Ain Ebel, southern Lebanon, where they kidnapped him and killed him by poisoning him and breaking his ribs. Then, in order to create the impression that he had swerved off the road and died in a car accident, they returned his body to his car that had hit a tree and left him inside in a ditch on the side of the road.”
According to Adraee, Unit 121, also known as Hezbollah’s Special Operations and Surveillance Unit, “carries out assassinations targeting journalists, officers, politicians, and other figures in Lebanon who oppose Hezbollah and its activism. The unit is the party’s internal security arm, which it uses to track down and eliminate its opponents,” among them “former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri.” The IDF spokesperson asserted that “the unit’s leader, Salim Ayyash, was convicted in 2020 by the United Nations-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon for leading the team that carried out Hariri’s assassination.”
How did the Lebanese react to this groundbreaking new?
The Lebanese population was divided regarding Adraee’s announcement.
Hezbollah and its allies downplayed these allegations, even questioning their accuracy, referring to an older post Adraee had previously published on March 28, 2025, claiming that Unit 121 belongs to Hezbollah’s Air Unit.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese Forces reiterated its call for the relevant Lebanese state authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding its party member’s assassination. Likewise, the head of the Change Movement Party, Elie Mahfoud, considered the assassination of Hosruni to be under the state’s responsibility to uncover all information. He stated that “we leave the disclosure of its details and the identification of the perpetrators to the official competent authorities, who we are certain possess complete information,” adding that
What is required of them today is clear courage in revealing the truth, naming the criminals, and identifying the entity behind them without hesitation or calculations.
Elias al-Hasrouni’s unresolved case
On August 2, 2023, Elias al-Hasrouni, the Secretary General of the Lebanese Forces Party in Bint Jbeil, Nabatiyeh was found dead inside a car in the Christian-majority village of Ain Ebel in southern Lebanon.
Despite initial news reporting the cause of death being a car crash, the LF later affirmed that Hasrouni was deliberately murdered, thus sidelining speculations of it being an accident. The party’s belief stemmed from Hezbollah’s intense military and intelligence presence in this region, Hasrouni’s staunch opposition to the group as well as visual footages taken by the cameras surrounding the crime scene.”
Indeed, on August 20, 2023, the head of the LF party, Samir Geagea, confirmed that “our comrade Elias al-Hasruni was killed and did not die as a result of a traffic accident, as was initially attempted to be portrayed, and this is very clear from the cameras surrounding the crime scene, which the others were not aware of, which is why they were caught off guard.” He claimed that “al-Hasruni was abducted in his car and taken to a place relatively far from the abduction site, where they killed him. The crime footage is now in the hands of the competent security forces, whether it is the Information Branch of the Internal Security Forces or the Intelligence Directorate of the Lebanese Army, and we review them daily to follow up on the progress of the investigations.”
