The IDF has launched a five-day military exercise in Galilee along the Lebanese border, its first large-scale drill in nearly two years since the 2023 Gaza War and Israel-Hezbollah conflict.

The Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee announced that the IDF began a five-day large-scale military exercise in the Galilee area along the Lebanese border. This unprecedented drill, which was planned in advance as “part of the annual training plan for 2025,” marks the first of such exercises in nearly 2 years since the outbreak of the 2023 Gaza War and the armed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
Adraee claimed that the military would train for “multi-branch cooperation to address a variety of scenarios, including defending the area and responding to immediate field threats.” The drill coincided with an Israeli incursion overnight toward the Birkat al-Mahafer area in the town of Aitaroun in Bint Jbeil, placing 4 concrete blocks along the road. However, the Lebanese Armed Forces, in coordination with UNIFIL, managed to remove the barriers which it claimed were meant to “block a road in the town and prevent residents from reaching their lands.”
Tel Aviv’s drill comes as rumors of possible escalation have recently spread, especially with negotiations between Lebanon and Israel continuing to falter. After the Gaza ceasefire and US Special Envoy Tom Barrack’s recent comments, all eyes have turned towards the Lebanese-Israeli frontier. The IDF’s massive exercise along the border and in this critical timing signal two correlated messages: a comforting one towards northern Israeli residents and a warning to Lebanon should the issues of disarmament and bilateral negotiations continue to be suspended.
