The Lebanese Order of Physicians has marked Cervical Cancer Awareness Month with a renewed call for prevention, early detection, and timely medical follow-up, emphasizing that cervical cancer remains one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer when identified early.

In a public awareness statement issued through its Environment and Public Health Committee, the Order reaffirmed its commitment to public health education, noting that delayed diagnosis continues to be one of the main reasons cervical cancer becomes life-threatening.

Why early screening matters

According to the Order, regular cervical screening plays a decisive role in reducing both complications and mortality linked to cervical cancer. Screening allows physicians to detect abnormal cellular changes in the cervix long before they develop into cancer, significantly improving treatment outcomes and recovery rates.

Women were encouraged to follow medically recommended screening schedules, particularly through:

- Pap smears, which identify early cellular abnormalities

- Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing, which detects the virus responsible for most cervical cancer cases

The Order stressed that adherence to routine screening is especially critical in settings where access to specialized care may be delayed.

HPV vaccination: Preventing cancer before it starts

The statement also highlighted the importance of HPV vaccination as a cornerstone of cervical cancer prevention. HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer worldwide, and vaccination has been proven to dramatically reduce infection rates and the likelihood of developing related cancers.

Physicians emphasized that vaccination, when administered according to medical guidelines, offers long-term protection and remains one of the most effective tools in preventing the disease altogether.

Recognizing warning signs

While preventive screening is key, the Order urged women not to ignore warning signs that may require immediate medical attention. Symptoms such as abnormal vaginal bleeding, persistent pelvic pain, or unexplained changes should prompt consultation with a healthcare provider.

Women were encouraged to speak with their primary care physician or gynecologist to determine appropriate screening and prevention plans based on age, medical history, and individual risk factors.

Awareness is not a substitute for care

The Lebanese Order of Physicians clarified that the statement is intended solely for awareness purposes and does not replace professional medical consultation. It concluded by underscoring that informed awareness, combined with preventive action and early detection, remains one of the most effective ways to save lives and protect women’s health.
