Satellite technology is moving beyond emergency messaging and consumer smartphones, laying the foundation for communications networks that governments, militaries and industries are preparing to use.
The space frontier of mobile networks
The ability to communicate by satellite has traditionally been confined to specialized phones used by militaries, emergency responders and expedition teams operating beyond the reach of conventional mobile networks. Today, that capability is moving into ordinary smartphones, allowing users to send messages, make calls and eventually access data directly through satellites without dedicated hardware.
Known as direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity, the technology allows compatible smartphones to communicate directly with satellites whenever conventional mobile coverage is unavailable, eliminating the need for a separate satellite phone.
The shift is attracting growing attention far beyond the consumer technology market. A July 2026 report by Boston Consulting Group and global space consulting and market intelligence firm Novaspace projects global government spending on satellite communications will increase from $11.8 billion in 2025 to $14.6 billion annually by 2030. The report argues that the smartphones consumers carry may become only the most visible application of satellite networks that governments, militaries and industries are preparing to use.
"The biggest misconception is that D2D is still a niche safety feature for people off the grid," Sumaiya Najarali and Jean-Baptiste Thépaut, co-authors of a new report, told The Beiruter.
The capability has moved into standard smartphones, and what began as emergency SOS messaging has evolved into voice and limited data service sold by mainstream carriers.
What appears to be another smartphone feature, they argue, is laying the foundation for communications networks supporting disaster response, military operations and remote industries.
From emergency feature to everyday connectivity
For most consumers, satellite connectivity first appeared as an emergency feature for contacting rescue services beyond conventional mobile coverage. Commercial services are now expanding to include voice calls and limited mobile data, moving D2D beyond emergency messaging and making satellite connectivity an extension of existing mobile networks.
Najarali and Thépaut said the shift is changing how mobile operators think about network coverage.
"Coverage, not just speed, will become the metric people judge a network by," they said. "Does my phone work here? becomes as basic a question as "How fast is my data?"
Consumer demand appears to be keeping pace with the technology's rapid development. The GSMA, the global association representing the mobile communications industry, found in its December 2025 report that 60% of smartphone users surveyed would pay more for satellite-enabled mobile service, while nearly half said they would consider changing mobile providers to gain satellite coverage outdoors.
Communications resilience is driving government interest
Keeping communications operating during conflict, natural disasters and infrastructure failures has become a growing priority for governments around the world. That is one reason the authors argue the most significant long-term opportunity for D2D lies well beyond consumer smartphones.
“The bigger shift is that D2D is no longer just a consumer story,” they said.
The same satellites and spectrum that power a hiker's emergency text are being built out to serve defense communications and government connectivity.
Unlike terrestrial mobile networks, satellite systems can continue providing connectivity when ground infrastructure is unavailable or damaged, making them valuable for disaster response, emergency communications and military operations.
According to the report, global government spending on satellite communications increased from $6.4 billion in 2020 to $11.8 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $14.6 billion annually by 2030. Defense accounted for nearly two-thirds of government satellite communications spending in 2025, highlighting the sector's importance to future market growth.
The Middle East could become one of the regions where these applications are particularly relevant.
"The Middle East combines exactly the conditions where D2D adds the most value," Najarali and Thépaut said.
The region has large areas with limited terrestrial infrastructure, real exposure to disasters and conflict, and governments that are increasingly focused on communications resilience and sovereignty.
They said civil emergency communications, disaster response and network backup are likely to be among the region's earliest applications before sovereign communications and defense become larger long-term markets.
The business case extends far beyond smartphones
The billions of dollars flowing into new satellite constellations cannot easily be justified by consumer subscriptions alone. Instead, operators and investors view the same satellites as infrastructure capable of serving multiple markets simultaneously.
One of the largest opportunities lies in the industrial Internet of Things, or IoT, which uses satellites to connect trucks, ships, pipelines and industrial machinery operating beyond reliable cellular coverage. That allows mining companies, energy producers, shipping operators and agricultural businesses to track equipment and monitor operations remotely.
"Consumers benefit first and most visibly through coverage in places terrestrial networks never reached and the ability to demand that capability from their carrier," Najarali and Thépaut said.
But the high-value opportunity sits with governments and enterprises. Defense communications, sovereign connectivity and industrial IoT are all higher-value markets and are growing quickly.
The report argues that integrating satellite capability into standard IoT devices could expand the market by lowering costs and eliminating specialized hardware.
For telecommunications companies, D2D may evolve from a premium service into an expected component of mobile coverage. Najarali and Thépaut compared the transition to in-flight Wi-Fi, which evolved from a premium offering to an expected feature. They argue satellite connectivity could follow a similar path.
The next competition is over communications infrastructure
The future of D2D may ultimately have less to do with smartphones than with who controls the communications networks supporting them.
The GSMA's Mobile Economy 2026 estimates mobile operators will invest nearly $1.5 trillion in network infrastructure between 2025 and 2030 as demand for next-generation connectivity continues to grow. Against that backdrop, satellite networks are becoming another layer of communications infrastructure rather than a standalone service.
Consumers are likely to encounter D2D first through improved coverage in remote areas. Over time, however, governments, militaries and companies connecting industrial assets could become the technology's largest customers.
As satellite and terrestrial networks become more closely integrated, D2D is becoming less about
enabling emergency messages from remote locations and more about ensuring communications continue wherever conventional mobile networks cannot.
