After losing younger users, Facebook bets on a comeback

Meta is rolling out a series of changes to Facebook as it seeks to revive the platform’s relevance and restore its cultural influence in an increasingly crowded social media landscape.

Once the dominant space for online conversation, Facebook has gradually lost its central role in public and cultural life, particularly among younger users, even as other Meta-owned platforms such as Instagram have continued to shape trends and online discourse. Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg has acknowledged this shift, saying he wants Facebook to become “culturally influential” again, echoing the role it played in its early years.

The latest updates reflect that ambition. Meta has introduced a redesigned Facebook feed aimed at making posts easier to view, navigate, and discover. The visual changes bring the platform closer to Instagram’s familiar look and feel, with features such as tapping photos to view them in full screen and double-tapping images to like them, gestures long associated with Instagram users.

Beyond the feed, the app itself is undergoing a broader redesign intended to reduce clutter and highlight Facebook’s most-used features. Meta says the goal is to simplify the experience, helping users more easily find what matters most to them, whether that is friends’ updates, shared interests, or popular content.

Posting content is also being streamlined. Similar to Instagram, users can now more quickly choose whether to share content to their feed or stories, add music, and tag friends, all from a simplified posting flow. The changes are designed to lower the barrier to sharing and encourage more frequent interaction on the platform.

“These improvements are just the beginning in making Facebook less cluttered and easier to use, so you can focus on the people and interests you care the most about,” Meta said in its announcement. The company also hinted that additional features and updates are planned for next year as part of its broader effort to refresh the app.

The move underscores Meta’s recognition that Facebook must evolve to compete for attention in a digital ecosystem increasingly dominated by short-form video, visual content, and fast-moving trends. By borrowing elements that have proven successful on Instagram, Meta is betting that a cleaner design and more intuitive interactions can help draw users back and perhaps restore Facebook’s place in the cultural conversation.
