AI is transforming architecture by accelerating design and expanding creative possibilities, but human judgment remains essential to turn ideas into safe, meaningful and buildable spaces.
Is AI the architect of tomorrow?
Imagine describing your dream home in a single sentence and watching it materialize on screen within seconds. What once sounded like science fiction is already ordinary practice in architecture studios today. Artificial intelligence is reshaping how spaces are imagined and designed, offering speed and creative range the profession has never had access to before. But as machines grow capable of generating almost anything a client can describe, one question becomes harder to avoid: where does that leave the architect? We put that question to architect Chloe Haouchab.
A tool with limitations
Haouchab did not hedge on the central question, “I don't think AI will replace architects, but I do think it will change the way we work, and it already has.” She was candid about what the technology genuinely offers, rapid concept generation, exploration of multiple design directions, and visualizations that would once have taken far longer to produce manually. But she was equally direct about its limits. AI can generate results that look entirely convincing while being structurally meaningless, "a structure may look possible but wouldn't actually stand the way it is shown," with unrealistic dimensions or materials that behave nothing like their real-world counterparts.
That gap, in her view, is exactly where the profession still matters. "AI generates based on information and patterns, but an architect has to question, verify, and make decisions," she said. Architects are asking whether it works, whether it's safe, and whether it can actually be built within a site's real constraints, regulations, and budget. "AI can give us hundreds of ideas, but we cannot assume that every answer it gives us is the right one," she said. "The architect is still the one who has to turn possibility into reality."
AI has impacted architectural workflow and Haouchab points to one factor above all, speed. Testing multiple materials, forms, and layouts that once took hours of manual development can now happen almost immediately, particularly useful in a project's earliest, most abstract stages. "AI can turn an initial thought into something visual, making discussions with clients and design teams more immediate," she said.
Still, she resists treating it as a design-completion tool. "I don't see it as a tool that produces finished designs," she said. "For me, AI is an additional creative assistant... but I'm still responsible for directing it, judging what works, and developing the result into architecture." The technology simply multiplies the number of ideas available to test and refine.
Why a home still needs an architect
Haouchab draws a direct comparison to medicine to explain why accessible AI tools don't eliminate the need for trained professionals. "AI can now analyze symptoms and medical images. Robots can even help surgeons with very complex operations. But we still need doctors," she said, pointing to the judgment, experience, and accountability required when something goes wrong. Architecture carries the same stakes. AI might generate a striking villa with dramatic cantilevers and floor-to-ceiling glass, "but that doesn't mean the building can actually stand, meet regulations, respond to the climate, or stay within the client's budget."
Beyond structural feasibility, she argues a home is never just a collection of rooms. "It reflects how someone lives... What memories they want to keep. And how they hope to live in the future." Reading those unspoken needs, privacy, calm, belonging, security, is something she believes AI cannot genuinely do.
AI can create attractive options, but it cannot fully understand what a home means to the person who will live there.
Haouchab sees a risk that predates AI entirely, architectural homogenization, first accelerated by platforms like Pinterest and Instagram, where a single aesthetic, beige interiors, curved walls, oversized arches, seamless microcement, spreads globally until buildings everywhere start to look alike. "AI could accelerate that sameness," she warned, particularly if large numbers of users feed it similar prompts and settle for similar outputs.
Her defense against that flattening is deliberate reinterpretation rather than direct imitation. She might draw inspiration from a courtyard in Mexico or a façade detail in Japan, but her role, she says, "is not to transplant those images unchanged." Designing a contemporary home in Lebanon, for instance, she might draw on the traditional Lebanese house, its cool central hall, rhythm of arches, and shaded balconies, without simply reproducing it, instead translating those principles into contemporary materials and forms suited to how people actually live today. "AI should work the same way," she said. "It can enlarge our library of inspiration, but the architect still has to filter it, challenge it, combine it."
The real divide ahead
Asked whether architects who embrace AI might eventually outcompete those who don't, Haouchab considers this the more realistic threat, not machines replacing architects, but adaptable architects outpacing those who resist new tools. She framed this as consistent with architecture's entire history, which has already evolved through hand drafting, CAD, 3D modeling, and BIM. "AI may not replace architects, but architects who know how to use AI may have an advantage over those who don't."
Her advice to the next generation leans on a familiar architectural voice. Quoting Mies van der Rohe, "it is logical for architecture to change as the way we live also changes", she urged young architects to learn emerging technologies without abandoning fundamentals: sketching, visiting construction sites, understanding materials, and developing an independent architectural eye.
Looking two decades ahead, Haouchab hopes AI's greatest contribution won't be speed at all, but safety, better simulations that help architects anticipate how buildings will withstand earthquakes, flooding, or extreme heat before construction even begins. "We cannot stop an earthquake or a tsunami, but perhaps we can become much better at designing cities and buildings that are prepared for them," she said. Whether AI is the architect of tomorrow, her answer was unequivocal. "Not on its own," she said. "It's part of the architect's tomorrow." As she put it, closing the conversation,
